Gannon University’s Orlando Biomedical Ethics and Catholic Social Teaching Lecture Series presented Amy Acton, MD, MPH, physician and community leader in private practice in preventative medicine and global public health.   

The lecture, titled “The Leader We Wish We All Had is YOU,” focused on leadership lessons learned in her role as director of the Ohio Department of Health, and as a trusted advisor to the governor of Ohio during the COVID-19 pandemic. She will give attendees a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like to coordinate the COVID-19 emergency response for 11.7 million patients and reflect on the skills needed in the modern leadership toolbox as we face increasingly complex challenges.  

Gannon University is recognized as a leader in training global citizens and is inspired by the Catholic intellectual tradition, especially its teaching on the dignity of the human person. The mission of the Biomedical Ethics and Catholic Social Teaching Endowment is to build on the legacy of the Orlando Endowment to establish the University as an interdisciplinary focal point for biomedical ethics and social responsibility, offering sound discernment and professional development.

Dr. Acton has spent over 35 years pursuing her passion for public health and wellness. Whether as Director of the Ohio Department of Health during early days of the COVID pandemic, Vice President of Human:Kind at the Columbus Foundation, or professor in global public health,  Dr. Acton has inspired interdisciplinary, cross-sector teams to address our most challenging issues and raise the bar higher, ensuring the community conditions in which all of us can flourish and realize our full potential.  

Dr. Acton’s widely acclaimed leadership and inspiring guidance were experienced in daily news conferences as COVID exploded in the spring of 2020, earning her a Profile in COVID Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in 2021. In 2022 she was named Woman of the Year (Ohio) by USA Today. Dr. Acton has been featured in many publications including The New York Times, Glamour, The New Yorker, TIME, Sesame Street, and most recently Smithsonian Magazine and Forbes. Locally, Dr. Acton received The Columbus Foundation’s 2020 Spirit of Columbus Award and is a recipient of Ohio State University’s highest alumni honor: the Alumni Medalist Award.
